What is herbal medicine?
Herbal medicine involves the use of plants, and extracts of plants as medicine and is often given in the form of tea, liquid tinctures, capsules, syrups and topically as creams, oils and poultices. The herbs contain compounds that have medicinal properties and can be used for so many different conditions. They are gentle on the body, nurturing and allow the body to heal.
Western herbal medicine has been practiced for thousands of years, by cultures all over the world. I love reading old texts, to find what they used certain herbs for back then, have now been researched by scientists and proven to treat exactly what they were using it for. I find this so special and wise that they had such a connection to this medicine.
While herbal medicine is generally safe, it is so important to work with a trained naturopath when using herbs, as some herbs can interact with medication, not be suitable for some people or may have side effects that need to be monitored.
The beauty of herbal medicine, is that is tailored to you and your symptoms.. it is individualised medicine.
